PLANT HEALTH

Plant health alerts: what to check before a problem spreads

A simple inspection routine for mildew, dieback, unusual spotting, pests and sudden decline.

Start with the pattern

Look at where the damage begins: newest leaves, oldest leaves, one branch, the whole plant or several plants nearby. That pattern often tells you more than one damaged leaf.

Check growing conditions first

Waterlogging, drought, root disturbance, poor airflow and nutrient problems can all mimic disease. Before reaching for a treatment, check soil moisture, drainage and recent weather.

Remove obvious sources of infection carefully

Where appropriate, remove badly affected leaves or dead material and clean tools between plants. Do not compost material if you suspect a serious persistent disease and cannot identify it confidently.

KS tip: Take clear photos of the whole plant, damaged leaves and stems before cutting anything off. It makes identification much easier.
