Quick garden guides

Short, practical answers for common garden jobs and problems. These are general UK guides — timing and methods can vary by plant, surface and site conditions.

✂️

Overgrown hedges

Reduce in stages where possible. Check for active nests before cutting. Start by removing obvious dead, damaged and crossing growth, then reshape gradually rather than taking a huge amount off in one go. Conifers usually will not regrow from old brown wood, so avoid cutting beyond green growth.

🌱

Mossy lawns

Moss usually points to shade, poor drainage, compaction or weak grass. Rake or scarify when conditions are suitable, aerate compacted soil, improve drainage where practical and overseed thin areas. Treating moss without fixing the cause usually means it returns.

🌿

Weedy borders

Work through the border in sections. Remove annual weeds before they seed and dig out perennial roots such as dandelion, couch grass and bindweed as completely as possible. Finish with a mulch to reduce new germination and conserve moisture.

🧱

Block paving weeds

Remove loose growth first, then clear weeds from the joints with a scraper, brush or suitable treatment. After cleaning, allow the paving to dry properly and replace lost jointing material with kiln-dried sand where appropriate.

🍂

Leaf-covered lawns

Do not leave a thick layer of wet leaves sitting on grass. It blocks light, traps moisture and can weaken the turf. Collect regularly, especially after heavy falls, and compost healthy leaves or use them to make leaf mould.

🌳

Leggy shrubs

First identify the shrub because pruning response varies by species. Remove dead and weak stems, then shorten selected old stems to encourage fresh growth. Avoid cutting everything to the same height unless the plant is known to tolerate hard renovation pruning.

🪱

Compact soil

For lawns, aerate with a garden fork or hollow-tine aerator when the soil is moist but not waterlogged. In borders, avoid walking on wet soil, add organic matter and let worms and roots improve structure gradually rather than repeatedly digging very wet ground.

💦

Green patios

Sweep away loose debris first. Algae and organic film can make paving slippery, especially in shade. Clean with a suitable surface-safe method, rinse carefully and avoid damaging joints or soft stone with excessive pressure.

🟩

Bare lawn patches

Loosen the surface, remove dead material, add a little fine topsoil if needed, sow a grass seed mix suited to the area, lightly rake it in and keep it evenly moist while it establishes. Protect new seed from heavy foot traffic.

🪴

Climbers out of control

Identify the climber before pruning because flowering time matters. Remove dead, tangled and badly placed stems first, then tie useful growth back to support wires or trellis. Renovate vigorous climbers gradually if a hard cut could remove the next season's flowers.

♻️

Garden waste

Separate compostable material from woody or diseased waste. Use your green bin where permitted, compost suitable soft material and dispose of larger quantities through a licensed route. Avoid putting invasive plants or persistent roots into a home compost heap unless you know they will be destroyed.

❄️

Winter preparation

Clear dangerous slippery leaves, secure loose pots and structures, check tree ties and stakes, protect vulnerable containers from hard frost, clean tools and keep some seed heads and dense cover for wildlife. Avoid stripping every border bare.
